Napoli e L'Europa/Naples and Europe

Ut Orpheus Edizioni launched the series Napoli e L’Europa/Naples and Europe in 2009 with a critical edition of Demofoonte by Niccolò Jommelli. The full project, La Scuola Napoletana dal XVII al XIX Secolo, involves the publication of critical and urtext editions of works by composers of the Neapolitan School along with performances by Riccardo Muti and the Orchestra Giovanile Luigi Cherubini; Demofoonte was performed in conjunction with the Opéra national de Paris in Salzburg, Paris, and Ravenna in spring and summer 2009.

Black music reference series

African Diaspora Press, a scholarly imprint specializing in bibliographies about expressive culture of Africa and the African diaspora, launched its Black music reference series in June 2010 with From vodou to zouk: A bibliographic guide to music of the French-speaking Caribbean and its diaspora by John Gray, the director of the Black Arts Research Center in Nyack, New York. The book’s nearly 1300 entries cover all of the French-speaking islands—in particular Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and French Guiana—as well as their overseas enclaves in France, the U.S., and Canada. Biographical and critical information on over 350 of the region’s leading musicians and producers is also provided.

Hugo Wolf: Briefe

Musikwissenschaftlicher Verlag launched the series Hugo Wolf: Briefe (1873–1901) in 2010 with Briefe 1873–91 (ISBN 978-3-902681-20-1), edited by Leopold Spitzer. The series is being issued in conjunction with the publisher’s complete edition of Wolf’s works.

Fitzwilliam Handeliana

In 2009 the music publisher Edition HH launched Fitzwilliam Handeliana, a series of publications of Handelian music inspired by manuscript holdings in The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The first volume in the series, Compositions for harpsichord and organ, is a collection of works by the founder himself: Richard, 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion (1745–1816). Edited by Gerald Gifford, the museum’s Honorary Keeper of Music, the volume presents rarely seen works by one of Händel’s ardent champions.

Schola Cantorum Basiliensis: Scripta

The series Schola Cantorum Basiliensis: Scripta was inaugurated by Schwabe Verlag in 2009 with Die frühen Werke Johann Sebastian Bachs: Stil, Chronologie, Satztechnik by Jean-Claude Zehnder. The book follows the young composer’s development from 1699 to 1708, showing how even in his teens Bach’s compositions evinced an innovative, experimental mind at work.

The Frog blues & jazz annual

Launched by Frog Records in 2010, The Frog blues & jazz annual is a book series that presents original research and articles on early jazz and blues. The inaugural issue, The musicians, the records & the music of the 78 era, includes articles about the Mississippi Jook Band’s Graves brothers, the pianist Arnold Wiley, and the vocalist Ida Cox.

Seebüller Hefte

In 2009 the Nolde Stiftung Seebüll in Neukirchen, Germany, inaugurated the series Seebüller Hefte with Volker Scherliess’s Erdmann und Nolde, which documents the friendship between the artist Emil Nolde and the pianist Eduard Erdmann (1896–1958). The foundation’s museum occupies the house that Nolde designed for himself in 1927; it is now devoted to exhibitions of his works.

Atti online

The Fondazione Giorgio Cini, a non-profit cultural institution based in Venice, launched the series Atti online in 2009 with Antonio Vivaldi: Passato e futuro, a collection of papers presented at the eponymous conference that the foundation sponsored in 2007. As the series title implies, the full collection is online; there is no charge for access.

Dal grammofono al lettore: Discografie ragionate

The Italian publisher L’Epos launched the series Dal grammofono al lettore: Discografie ragionate in 2009 to present annotated discographies that illustrate aspects of the history of sound recordings. The first book in the series, Bach Goldberg, Beethoven Diabelli by Carlo Fiore, illuminates the interpretation and reception histories of these two landmark sets of keyboard variations.

Arte Organaria Italiana

Published by the L’Associazione Culturale Giuseppe Serassi,  Arte Organaria Italiana was launched in 2009 to provide a forum for research on organs in Italy.

Articles in the first issue include a discussion of pedaling in Frescobaldi’s organ works, a study of organs in the Cattedrale di Mantova during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and an exploration of nineteenth-century organ case aesthetics.
