Opera musicologica

In 2009 the Sankt-Peterburgskaâ Gosudarstvennaâ Konservatoriâ imeni N.A. Rimskogo-Korsakova launched Opera Musicologica (ISSN 2075-4078). This peer-reviewed quarterly journal aims to provide a platform for dialogues between different schools and areas of musical scholarship, to present a wide spectrum of topics and methods, and to give space to understudied areas, new scholarly problems, and interdisciplinary approaches. Edited by the scholar of twentieth-century American music Olga Manulkina, Opera Musicologica is published in Russian with Russian and English abstracts. The first issue presents archival documents and essays highlighting the Conservatory’s history on the eve of its 150^th anniversary; the issue’s table of contents and English abstracts are here.

Submissions: The old days

Before RILM set up online forms for sending us citations and abstracts, all submissions were made by writing or typing on forms like the one pictured above. We had forms in all necessary languages, color-coded for sorting. As was the case with most manual typewriters, corrections and diacritics all had to be added by hand. After we received completed forms, everything had to be retyped into the database (and, for non-English titles and abstracts, translated into English) at the International Center.

Over the years, countless volunteers have made such contributions to RILM, including some very distinguished figures in musicology and ethnomusicology. The example above was submitted by the preeminent Spanish musicologist José López-Calo (b.1922) for the retrospective project undertaken by RILM’s founder Barry S. Brook in the 1970s—a project that finally reached fruition with the publication of Speaking of Music: Music conferences, 1835–1966 in 2004.

Music's intellectual history

RILM has just inaugurated its series RILM perspectives with Music’s intellectual history: 66 essays offering insights into the history of music scholarship from the Renaissance to the twentieth century and demonstrating the natural partnership of RILM and historiographic investigation. The contributions address an array of subjects and perspectives that indicate the directions music scholarship has taken in the past, reveal the precedents of current scholarly habits, and suggest future paths. Rāgamālā paintings

Rāgamālā painting is a form of iconography that arose around 1600 in northern India.

These visual depictions of rāgas involve the various extramusical associations that theorists have assigned to them; for example, this visualization of the Hindustani rāg bhairavī from about 1610 depicts women worshiping at a shrine to Śiva, embodying the rāga’s association with both Śiva and feminine energy, and evoking the colors of its traditional early-morning context.

Music and medicine

Launched in 2009, Music and medicine (ISSN 1943‑8621) is a peer-reviewed journal published by the International Association for Music and Medicine (IAMM). The journal is intended for medical professionals, aiming to be “an integrative forum for clinical practice and research initiatives related to music interventions and applications of clinical music strategies in medicine.” While it naturally includes research in music therapy, the journal also invites work on “cultural implications of music in medicine in research and practice” as well as opinion papers on controversial topics.

Etnoumlje: Srpski world music magazine

Etnoumlje: Srpski world music magazine (ISSN 1452-9920) has been published quarterly by the World Music Asocijacija Srbije since the summer of 2007.

The magazine provides insight into the Serbian world music scene through interviews and profiles of members of Serbian bands and reviews of recordings, events, and publications, as well as regular features on Serbian traditional music.

Its editor, Oliver Đorđević, defines it as a periodical for “theory, history, aesthetics, and criticism of world music, with the aim of promoting and advancing Serbian world music.” Etnoumlje also collects information for a future Web-based register of Serbian world music bands and artists.

Postage stamps

Postage stamps are singular sources for music iconography. Since these images comprise officially sanctioned national and international recognition, they provide windows on what governments and constituencies in various cultures and at various times have deemed worthy of celebration.

For example, the South Indian magazine Sruti regularly features philatelic reports on stamps issued by the Indian Department of Posts; these include an impressive number of commemorations of composers and performers from India’s classical Karnatak and Hindustani traditions. The stamp pictured above was issued to honor the śahnāī player Bismillāh Khān (1915–2006) on 21 August 2008.

Journal of dance & somatic practices

Launched in 2009, Journal of dance & somatic practices (ISSN 1757-1871) is a peer-reviewed journal that explores the relationship between dance and somatic practices, and the influence of this body of practice on the wider performing arts.

In the words of its editor, Sarah Whatley, the journal aims “to provide space for debate around moving, thinking, and writing, and to offer a celebration of the somatic epistemology that underpins important developments in dance and movement practices that have emerged and found purchase in recent years, whilst also acknowledging the challenges that this brings for all those engaged in the work.”

International journal of community music

International journal of community music (ISSN 1752-6299) is a refereed journal that publishes research, practical discussions, reviews, readers’ notes, and special issues concerning all aspects of community music. To define its scope, the editors—David Elliott, Lee Higgins, and Kari Veblen—write: “Just as music and community are situated, contested, contingent, and hard to pin down, so too are concepts of community music as practice and as scholarship. In short, community music is a complex, multidimensional, and continuously evolving human endeavor.” The journal was launched in 2008.
